More about Ahwahnee
A stagecoach-era town
Ahwahnee grew up in the 1890s as a stop on the Raymond-Wawona stage road, when Yosemite Stage Line operator Albert Henry Washburn set up a way station here. It later held the Tri-County Tuberculosis Sanatorium (1919-1969) and, after that, a boys' school.
Ahwahnee Hills Regional Park
That old institutional land is now the Ahwahnee Hills Regional Park - opened in 2014 thanks to local volunteers - with easy trails, oak meadows, and ponds. Nearby, Wassama Round House State Historic Park preserves a reconstructed Miwok ceremonial roundhouse.
