Weather & climate
The foothills get a true four seasons - milder than the mountains, greener than the valley - but elevation is the whole story, and it climbs fast along Highway 41.
The seasons
Summers are warm to hot and dry; the towns around 2,200-2,600 feet (Coarsegold, Oakhurst, Ahwahnee) see hot afternoons that cool off at night. Winters are mild and wet, with green hills from the rains and only occasional low-elevation snow. Spring brings wildflowers and full creeks; fall is long, golden, and the peak of fire season.
Elevation changes everything
| Area | ~Elevation | Winter feel |
|---|---|---|
| Coarsegold / Indian Lakes Estates | ~2,250 ft | Rare, light snow |
| Oakhurst / Ahwahnee | ~2,300 ft | Occasional dustings |
| Bass Lake | ~3,400 ft | Real snow some storms |
| Fish Camp | ~5,000 ft | Regular winter snow |
The upshot: you can live in near-snow-free foothills and still reach sledding, snow play, and a national park within an hour. Just know your parcel's elevation - it affects snow, gardening, and access.
Thinking about buying or selling? The foothills reward local knowledge - wells, septic, fire zones and road access vary parcel to parcel. Find a vetted local real-estate agent →
