More about Mariposa

Gold Rush history

Named for the butterflies ("mariposas") early explorers saw here, the town grew out of John C. Frémont's Las Mariposas land grant. The Mariposa County Courthouse, built in 1854, is the oldest court of law in continuous operation west of the Mississippi and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The All-Year Route to Yosemite

From Mariposa, Highway 140 - the "All-Year Route" - follows the Wild & Scenic Merced River into Yosemite at Arch Rock near El Portal, often the most reliable park approach in winter.
