More about Oakhurst

From Fresno Flats to gateway town

Oakhurst started in 1858 as Fresno Flats - named for the ash trees ("fresno" in Spanish) on the flat meadowlands - and grew as a cattle stop and logging center before the 1876 Madera-Yosemite wagon road turned it into a travel gateway. The Fresno Flats Historical Park preserves that era.

The area's hub

If the foothills have a downtown, this is it: grocery, hardware, restaurants, a hospital, and the Visit Yosemite | Madera County visitor center at 40343 Highway 41. It's where residents of Coarsegold, Ahwahnee, Bass Lake, and North Fork come to run errands.

Gateway to Yosemite

More than 1.2 million visitors a year enter Yosemite through the south gate up Highway 41, and most pass through Oakhurst - which keeps a steady tourism economy of lodging and dining, especially in summer. See our Yosemite gateway guide.
