More about Coarsegold

History

Coarsegold was born in the 1849 Gold Rush - its name comes from the coarse gold found in the local gulch. A trading post went up around 1852 at the one fordable point on the Fresno River, and traffic grew after the wagon road to Yosemite Valley was finished in 1876. The Coarse Gold post office opened in 1878. Today it's remembered as Madera County's last surviving "gold town."

Chukchansi & native heritage

The area is the heart of the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians, a federally recognized tribe of the Yokuts whose presence here goes back thousands of years. You can dig into local history at the Coarsegold Historic Village and the Coarsegold Historical Museum.

Things to do & daily life

Coarsegold keeps its frontier streak with the annual Coarsegold Rodeo and the tongue-in-cheek Tarantula Awareness Festival each fall. The Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino anchors the east side, and the shopping village covers everyday needs, with Oakhurst's fuller services 15 minutes up the road. Nearby foothill neighborhoods include Indian Lakes Estates and Yosemite Lakes Park.
