20 minutes from Indian Lakes Estates
Bass Lake
Boating, beaches and a famous kokanee bite - the foothills' summer headquarters.
Bass Lake is the foothills' summer headquarters: a warm-water Sierra reservoir at 3,400 feet, 20 minutes from Indian Lakes Estates, ringed by pines and busy with boats from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Boating & rentals
Full-service marinas rent everything from fishing boats and pontoons to ski boats, jet skis, kayaks and paddleboards: Miller's Landing Resort at the south end and Bass Lake Boat Rentals & Water Sports at The Pines are the two staples; the Bass Lake Chamber keeps a current list. Summer weekends book out - reserve ahead, and expect a county day-use fee at the launch ramps.
Fishing
The lake holds rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, largemouth and spotted bass, catfish and crappie - fishable year-round, with trout plants in the cooler months and a locally famous kokanee bite in early summer. A California fishing license is required; the quiet coves at the north end fish best from a kayak at first light.
Beaches & day use
Forest Service day-use areas around the shoreline offer swim beaches and picnic grounds along the north shore road. Arrive early on July weekends - parking fills before noon and the patrol tows.
On the calendar
The Fourth of July fireworks over the water are the foothills' single biggest night - boats raft up mid-lake hours ahead. Ducey's on the Lake at The Pines does the classic dinner-on-the-water; in fall the resort quiets down and the patio becomes a locals' room again.
Off-season
Locals' secret: September through May the lake goes quiet. Glass-calm mornings, empty trails, and cabin rates drop. For the community itself, see our Bass Lake community guide and current Bass Lake listings.
