You can play golf year-round in the foothills - winters are mild at 2,000-3,000 feet, and the courses come with oak-studded fairways and Sierra views instead of freeway noise. Three courses define local golf, each with its own personality.
River Creek Golf Course
The foothills' everyday course, and the one locals mean when they say "meet you at the course." Nine walkable holes laid along the Fresno River in Ahwahnee, tree-lined and honest - short enough to play after work, tricky enough around the river holes to keep your attention.
The vibe is pure foothills: relaxed dress code, friendly rates, regulars who will wave you through, and The Gulch Bar & Grill as the 10th hole. Weekday twilight is the local ritual - the light goes gold, the oaks throw long shadows, and the river does the talking.
Sierra Meadows
The area's other fairways have lived several lives - country club, public course, wedding and event venue - and operations have changed from season to season. What never changes is the setting: broad ranch meadows under Deadwood Mountain, five minutes from downtown Oakhurst.
Call before you plan a round. Even when the golf is quiet, the ranch hosts events and the grounds explain why people keep bringing it back.
Wawona - golf inside Yosemite
Up Highway 41 inside the park, the Wawona Hotel's nine is the Sierra's grand old course - built in 1918, one of the first regulation courses in the range, and still mowed out of a mountain meadow beside a Victorian hotel. Deer graze the rough. Nobody hurries.
It operates seasonally, spring through fall, and walk-ons are part of the culture. Play it once each summer just to say you did - there is nowhere else quite like holing out inside a national park.
When to play
Fall and spring are prime - 70-degree afternoons and clear air. Summer mornings beat the heat and twilight rates beat everything. Winter golf is real here too: expect frost delays, not snow days, most weeks.
Further afield
For 18-hole variety, the Madera and Fresno courses are 40-50 minutes down Highway 41 - a reasonable trade for living where the practice green has a mountain view.
